Book excerpt: In To the Far Blue Mountains, Louis L’Amour weaves the unforgettable tale of a man who, after returning to his homeland, discovers that finding his way back to America may be impossible. Barnabas Sackett was leaving England to make his fortune in the New World. But as he settled his affairs, he learned that a royal warrant had been sworn out against him and that men were searching for him in every port. At issue were some rare gold coins Sackett had sold to finance his first trip to the Americas—coins believed to be part of a great treasure lost by King John years before. Believing that Sackett possesses the rest of the treasure, Queen Bess will stop at nothing to find him. If he’s caught, not only will his dream of a life in America be lost, but he will be brutally tortured and put to death on the gallows.

Book excerpt: An epic spanning multiple generations in one frontier family, Louis L’Amour’s Sackett series is perhaps the crowning achievement of one of our greatest storytellers. Now, for the first time, the Sackett origin story is available as an eBook bundle featuring Sackett’s Land, To the Far Blue Mountains, The Warrior’s Path, and Jubal Sackett. These four novels chronicle the arrival of the patriarch on American soil and the unforgettable adventures of his sons as they strike out into the wilderness of a sprawling new land. SACKETT’S LAND After finding six gold Roman coins buried in an English swampland, Barnabas Sackett invests in goods to trade in America. But he also has a powerful enemy with a grudge that goes back to Sackett’s father. On the eve of his departure, Sackett is attacked and thrown into the hold of a pirate ship. After managing to escape, he makes his way to the Carolina coast, where the raw, abundant land promises a bright future. However, before that dream can be realized, Sackett must first discover the secret of his father’s legacy. TO THE FAR BLUE MOUNTAINS After returning to England, Barnabas Sackett discovers that finding his way back to America to make his fortune may be impossible. A warrant has been issued for his arrest and men are searching for him in every port. Believing that Sackett possesses a rare royal treasure, Queen Bess will stop at nothing to find him. If he’s caught, not only will his dream of a life in America be lost, but he will be brutally tortured and put to death on the gallows. THE WARRIOR’S PATH When Yance Sackett is called upon to rescue two kidnapped girls—one of whom is his wife’s young sister—he corrals his brother Kin and together they race north from Carolina to find her. Arriving at a small town rife with superstition, the brothers learn that someone very powerful was behind the girls’ abduction. To bring the culprit to justice, Kin sails to the exotic West Indies. There, among pirates, cutthroats, and ruthless “businessmen,” he will apply the skills he learned as a frontiersman to an unfamiliar world—where one false move means instant death. JUBAL SACKETT Jubal Sackett’s urge to explore has driven him westward, and when a Natchez priest asks him to undertake a nearly impossible quest, Sackett ventures into the endless grassy plains the Indians call the Far Seeing Lands. He seeks a Natchez exploration party and its leader, Itchakomi. It is she who will rule her people when their aging chief dies. But first she must vanquish her rival, the arrogant warrior Kapata. Sackett’s journey will bring him danger from an implacable enemy . . . and show him a life—and a woman—worth dying for.

Book excerpt: Changeling destiny-an injured Apache girl adopted by a powerful rancher, the rancher's son kidnapped in revenge by the last free Apaches. Inspired by historical events that took place in the 1920s Sierra Madre, Far Blue Mountains is a gothic western like no other. In 1926, when rancher Jubal McKenna discovers an injured Apache girl and welcomes her into his family, he sets in motion an irrevocable exchange of destiny. The girl is a member of the last unsurrendered Apaches. They live in freedom well into the 20th century, hidden in the wild mountains of Mexico, where they keep the old ways. An eye for an eye, blood for blood-in reprisal, the Apaches kidnap Jubal's young son, John Russell McKenna. They take the boy into the sierras to live as one of their own, a beloved captive. The boy is immersed in Apache culture, a world of freedom and adventure, brutal violence and strange magic. John Russell becomes Denali, an Apache warrior. Meanwhile Jubal searches the sierras for Apache camps, as the quest for revenge threatens to consume his soul. This magnificent first novel by Max McNabb, the editor of TexasHillCountry.com, has all the relentless pace of a classic western and the elegiac beauty of a lost myth. At once a grand adventure and a darkly beautiful tragedy, Far Blue Mountains is a meditation on identity and destiny, freedom and revenge.

Book excerpt: This is the concluding volume of the saga of Barnabus Sackett, patriarch of that family. He returns to England, where he learns of an order for his arrest. The gold coins he found in Sackett's land are thought to be the royal treasure King John lost in the Wash during the time of the Crusades. After encountering some old friends and enemies from the previous book, he returns to America with Abigail, his new bride. He establishes a community between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Franklin, North Carolina, called Shooting Creek. It is a dangerous time. His oldest son, Ken-Ring, is born in the heat of a battle with Indians, a man standing over the mother with a sword in his hand for protection. In all Barnabus has four sons and a daughter. His son, Brian, and daughter, Noelle, return to England with their mother to improve their education, but Ken-Ring, Yance, and Jubal remain behind to carry on their father's legacy. After a long, adventurous life, Barnabus dies fighting Indians and lies in a lonely forgotten grave.

Book excerpt: Our ancestors began arriving in eastern Kansas about 1855. Few white people were in Kansas at that time as it was illegal to settle in Indian Territory until the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. But soon thousands of newcomers began arriving, especially after the Civil War, and by 1900 the area was fully settled. But life remained largely unchanged from that experienced by people for thousands of years previously. Automobiles, telephones, television, tractors, air travel, electricity and good roads did not exist on the farm in 1900 much less in 1855. The United States was still an agrarian society dependent on horse power supplemented by a few railroads and steam engines. Things were about to change dramatically! Between 1900 and 1920 widespread introduction of tractors, automobiles, airplanes, radio and telephones changed life on the farm forever. Our grandparents and great grandparents not only lived through and adapted to these profound changes, they fought and won WWI. Drought and depression followed in the 1930s and then they won WWII in the 1940s. We came along about that time as the sixth generation of Lindseys in the area and the first post WWII generation. Much of the life our ancestors knew on the frontier had already passed, but remnants still existed. Most importantly, many of our ancestors who had lived through and experienced these times were still around and were eager to share their life stories with us. We soaked it up and have now tried to pass it on. We think you will enjoy learning something of what it was like growing up on the farm in the 1940s and 50s and hearing of our ancestors lives in early Kansas. In many ways it was a simpler life then but it certainly wasnt easy. Marvin and Steven Lindsey

Book excerpt: Trent came to Idaho seeking solitude. He built a cabin, broke a few wild horses, and quietly put his pas behind him. Then King Bill Hale began laying claim to all the land around Cedar Bluff. When Hale's son kills one of Trent's neighbors, Trent quickly steps forward to lead the fight. Their property had been legally filed on, but Bill Hale has the men, money, and political power to steal it from them. What Hale doesn't realize is that Trent also has connections. With evidence that can ruin Hale's scheme, Trent must find a way past Hale's gang of thugs to the men who can help him. However, if he succeeds, his violent past will be revealed; if he fails, the others may forfeit their land. But Trent could forfeit his life.
