Book excerpt: At the age of twelve, under the Wind Moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home. In a card game with a white Indian named Featherstone, Will wins - for a brief moment - a mysterious girl named Claire, and his passion and desire for her spans this novel. As Will's destiny intertwines with the fate of the Cherokee Indians, including a Cherokee Chief named Bear, he learns how to fight and survive in the face of both nature and men, and eventually, under the Corn Tassle Moon, Will begins the fight against Washington City to preserve the Cherokee's homeland and culture. And he will come to know the truth behind his belief that 'only desire trumps time'. Brilliantly imagined, written with great power and beauty by a master of American fiction, Thirteen Moons is a stunning novel about a man's passion for a woman, and how loss, longing and love can shape a man's destiny over the many moons of a life.

The format folds a soldier’s stories of actual experiences in Vietnam ‘between the lines’ of letters sent home to his new wife. The stark contrast between those experiences and the content of his letters home reveals a tension between openness and self-censorship. The soldier’s focus is to protect their love relationship, but he struggles with his own behavior in an environment of moral challenges. As he encounters social and emotional violence, his own actions trigger inner turmoil and weaken his spiritual well-being. This book is the second in a series, organized by the thirteen months of his tour of duty. Read 2nd Moon: Temptation and follow a soldier’s drift into situations that challenge his moral convictions. These encounters begin his metamorphosis from faithful innocence toward detachment, as an internal battle rages for his heart and soul.

There are already hundreds of publications on the Vietnam War. 13 Moons over Vietnam captures a unique perspective of a soldier’s experience of war, juxtaposing more than 150 stories between the lines of 280 uncensored letters to his wife, who was pregnant with their first child. These stories, describing actual experiences, are conveyed with raw emotions of anxiety and fear, refuting the nonchalant tone of his correspondence home. The effect is a stark and unsettling contrast between what is written home and what actually happens. 13 Moons over Vietnam is organized as a series segmented by lunar cycles that symbolize the author’s struggles with identity and faith as he confronts progressive incidents of social and emotional violence. Begin with 1st Moon: Innocence, and witness a metamorphosis that spirals through a moral and spiritual minefield.

Book excerpt: Robert Johnson's Thirteen Moons is an engaging and humorous chronicle of a year the author spent living in a tipi in the rugged wilderness of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California from May 1984 through May 1985. Styled chronologically like a journal, his narrative account, spiced with levity and an easy-going, self-deprecating manner, is filled with high adventure, philosophical musing, encounters with eccentric goldminers, marijuana growers, a dog named Bob, obsessed fishermen, an FBI hippie, and an extremely large rattlesnake, as well as vivid descriptions of the natural history of the region.Like Kerouac's Dharma Bums, Abbey's Desert Solitaire, and Thoreau's Walden, Johnson's odyssey combines a love for nature and solitude with a commitment to understanding his place in the world: I removed the last of my possessions -- my snowshoes, mask, and snorkel, my pancake griddle and vegetable seeds, my gold pan and bow saw and books on Zen and Plato, my manual typewriter and fishing pole...and stuffed them into my bulging backpack...Not only would it be my first attempt at dragging my tipi poles down the three miles of arduous, switch-backing trail, but it would be my official move-in date -- Day One of my proposed year in the wilderness.A poignant and spiritual quest by a young man testing himself in the wilderness, putting his faith in providence, and managing the revelations of self-knowledge and survival with down-to-earth pluck and skill.

Book excerpt: Focusing on intermediality, The Material Image situates film within questions of representation familiar from the other arts: What is meant by figuring the real? How is the real suggested by visual metaphors, and what is its relation to illusion? How is the spectator figured as entering the text, and how does the image enter our world? The film's spectator is integral to these concerns. Cognitive and phenomenological approaches to perception alike claim that spectatorial affect is "real" even when it is film that produces it. Central to the staging of intermediality in film, tableaux moments in film also figure prominently in the book. Films by Scorsese, Greenaway, Wenders, and Kubrick are seen to address painterly, photographic, and digital images in relation to effects of the real. Hitchcock's films are examined with regard to modernist and realist effects in painting. Chapters on Fassbinder and Haneke analyze the significance of tableau for the body in pain, while a final chapter on horror film explores the literalism of psychopathic tableau. Here, too, art and the body—images and the real—are juxtaposed and entwined in a set of relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full Moon Feast invites us to a table brimming with locally grown foods, radical wisdom, and communal nourishment. In Full Moon Feast, accomplished chef and passionate food activist Jessica Prentice champions locally grown, humanely raised, nutrient-rich foods and traditional cooking methods. The book follows the thirteen lunar cycles of an agrarian year, from the midwinter Hunger Moon and the springtime sweetness of the Sap Moon to the bounty of the Moon When Salmon Return to Earth in autumn. Each chapter includes recipes that display the richly satisfying flavors of foods tied to the ancient rhythm of the seasons. Prentice decries our modern food culture: megafarms and factories, the chemically processed ghosts of real foods in our diets, and the suffering--physical, emotional, cultural, communal, and spiritual--born of a disconnect from our food sources. She laments the system that is poisoning our bodies and our communities. But Full Moon Feast is a celebration, not a dirge. Prentice has emerged from her own early struggles with food to offer health, nourishment, and fulfillment to her readers. She recounts her relationships with local farmers alongside ancient harvest legends and methods of food preparation from indigenous cultures around the world. Combining the radical nutrition of Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions, keen agri-political acumen, and a spiritual sensibility that draws from indigenous as well as Western traditions, Full Moon Feast is a call to reconnect to our food, our land, and each other.
