Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman and the Development of Doctrine provides an analysis of the attempts by John Henry Newman to account for the historical reality of doctrinal change within Christianity in the light of his lasting conviction that the idea of Christianity is fixed by reference to the dogmatic content of the deposit of faith. It argues that Newman proposed a series of hypotheses to account for the apparent contradiction between change and continuity, that this series begins much earlier than is generally recognized and that the final hypothesis he was to propose, contained in An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, provides a methodology of lasting theological value and contemporary relevance. Stephen Morgan establishes the centrality of the problem of change and continuity in theology, to Newman's theological work as an Anglican, its part in his conversion to Catholicism and its contemporary relevance to Catholic theology. It also surveys the major secondary literature relating to the question, with particular reference to those works published within the last fifty years. Additionally, Morgan considers the legacy of the Essay as a tool in Newman’s theology and in the work of later theologians, finally suggesting that it may offer a useful methodological contribution to the contemporary Catholic debate about hermeneutical approaches to the Second Vatican Council and post-conciliar developments in doctrine.

Book excerpt: This volume supplements "The Quotable Newman" (Sophia Institute Press, 2012), with 136 new topics and an overlap of 39 topics. Volume II is a bit more wide-ranging and perhaps also more "fun" (in a sense) for Newman devotees. Examples of the latter aspect might include Cardinal Newman's reflections upon his own writing and books, science and Christianity, heaven and hell, and old age. The citations also tend to be relatively shorter, and to include proportionately more material from his correspondence. I found two additional volumes of "Letters and Diaries" (volumes 27 and 28): covering the years of 1874-1878. They contain a lot of excellent observations and "gems" on a variety of topics, that I was delighted to find and now to pass along, for the education and edification of the reader. Once again, theology is the overwhelming emphasis. Anyone interested in Cardinal Newman's Catholic (or Anglican) doctrinal thinking and beliefs will, I trust, enjoy and learn from what I have compiled.

Book excerpt: “I want a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, and who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it.” John Henry Newman To raise up Catholics who “know their creed so well that they can give an account of it,” John Henry Newman—the 19th century British Cardinal recently pronounced “Blessed” by Pope Benedict XVI—preached thousands of sermons, wrote scores of books, and published countless articles explaining our Catholic faith, with particular attention to the relationship between faith and reason. So prodigious was Cardinal Newman’s output that only a few souls have read all he wrote. Yet so keen was his intellect—and so profound his love for our Lord — that even those who’ve read just a few pages have profited greatly, growing quickly in knowledge, understanding, and renewed faith in God. Now comes Dave Armstrong, himself drawn forth from Protestantism by the power of Cardinal Newman’s words. Eager to share Newman’s wisdom with others, Armstrong has mined from over forty of Cardinal Newman’s works to produce substantive passages on more than 100 topics ranging from Angels, Absolution, and the Bible, through Confession, the Eucharist, Infallibility, and the Inquisition, and reaching all the way to the Sacraments, the Saints, Transubstantiation, and the Trinity. Armstrong selected these particular passages for their beauty, to be sure, but even more for the clarity and persuasiveness with which they present and defend so many key theological positions of our Catholic Church. Whether you are a catechist, an apologist, a Catholic layman, or just a searcher after truth, you will find in these hundreds of passages a lucid consideration of most any Catholic teaching of serious concern to you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly edited version of John Henry Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua sheds new light on Newman's celebrated account of his passage from the Church of England to the Roman Catholic Church and repositions his narrative within the context of transformative religious journeys of other Victorian intellectuals. Frank M. Turner is the first historian of Victorian thought, religion, and culture to edit Newman's classic autobiographical narrative. Drawing on extensive research in contemporary printed materials and archives, Turner's powerfully revisionist Introduction reevaluates and challenges the historical adequacy of previous interpretations of Newman's life and of the Apologia itself. He further presents Newman's volume as a response to ultramontane assertions of papal authority in the l860s. In addition to numerous explanatory textual annotations, the volume includes an Appendix featuring six important Anglican sermons that providesignificant insights into Newman's thought during the years recounted in the Apologia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Oxford Movement reflects the rich and diverse nature of scholarship on the Oxford Movement and provides pointers to further study and new lines of enquiry. Part I considers the origins and historical context of the Oxford Movement. These chapters include studies of the legacy of the seventeenth-century 'Caroline Divines' and of the nature and influence of the eighteenth and early nineteenth-century High Church movement within the Church of England. Part II focuses on the beginnings and early years of the Oxford Movement, paying particular attention to the people, the distinctive Oxford context, and the ecclesiastical controversies that inspired the birth of the Movement and its early intellectual and religious expressions. In Part III the theme shifts from early history of the Oxford Movement to its distinctive theological developments. This section analyses Tractarian views of religious knowledge and the notion of 'ethos'; the distinctive Tractarian views of tradition and development; and Tractarian ecclesiology, including ideas of the via media and the 'branch theory' of the Church. The years of crisis for the Oxford Movement between 1841 and 1845, including John Henry Newman's departure from the Church of England, are covered in Part IV. Part V then proceeds to a consideration of the broader cultural expressions and influences of the Oxford Movement. Part VI focuses on the world outside England and examines the profound impact of the Oxford Movement on Churches beyond the English heartland, as well as on the formation of a world-wide Anglicanism. In Part VII, the contributors show how the Oxford Movement remained a vital force in the twentieth century, finding expression in the Anglo-Catholic Congresses and in the Prayer Book Controversy of the 1920s within the Church of England. The Handbook draws to a close, in Part VIII, with a set of more generalised reflections on the impact of the Oxford Movement, including chapters on the judgement of the converts to Roman Catholicism over the Movement's loss of its original character, on the spiritual life and efforts of those who remained within the Anglican Church to keep Tractarian ideas alive, on the engagement of the Movement with Liberal Protestantism and Liberal Catholicism, and on the often contentious historiography of the Oxford Movement which continued to be a source of church party division as late as the centennial commemorations of the Movement in 1933. An 'Afterword' chapter assesses the continuing influence of the Oxford Movement in the world Anglican Communion today, with special references to some of the conflicts and controversies that have shaken Anglicanism since the 1960s.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to explain the ways in which Anglicans have sought to practise theology in their various contexts. It is a clear, insightful, and reliable guide which avoids technical jargon and roots its discussions in concrete examples. The book is primarily a work of historical theology, which engages deeply with key texts and writers from across the tradition (e.g. Cranmer, Jewel, Hooker, Taylor, Butler, Simeon, Pusey, Huntington, Temple, Ramsey, and many others). As well as being suitable for seminary courses, it will be of particular interest to study groups in parishes and churches, as well as to individuals who seek to gain a deeper insight into the traditions of Anglicanism. While it adopts a broad and unpartisan approach, it will also be provocative and lively.
