Book excerpt: The Self-Centred Art is a study of the plays of Ben Jonson and the actors who first performed in them. Jakub Boguszak shows how the idiosyncrasies of Jonson’s comic characters were thrown into relief in actors’ part-scripts—scrolls containing a single actor’s lines and cues—some five hundred of which are reconstructed here from Jonson’s seventeen extant plays. Reading Jonson’s spectating parts, humorous parts, apprentice parts, and plotting parts, Boguszak argues that the kind of self-absorption which defines so many of Jonson’s famous comic creations would have come easily to actors relying on these documents. Jonson’s actors would have moreover worked on their cues, studied their speeches, and thought about the information excluded from their parts differently, depending on the type they had to play. Boguszak thus shows that Jonson brilliantly adapted his comedies to the way the actors worked, making the actors’ self-centredness serve his art. This book addresses Jonson’s dealings with the actors as well as the printers of his plays and supplements the discussion of different types of parts with a colourful range of case studies. In doing so, it presents a new way of understanding not just Ben Jonson, but early modern theatre at large.

This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Oxford Shakespeare is a landmark print and online project, which for the first time provides fully edited and annotated texts of all extant versions of all Shakespeare's works, including collaborations, revisions, and adaptations. Based on a fresh examination of the surviving original documents, it draws upon the latest interdisciplinary scholarship, supplemented by new research undertaken by a diverse international team. Although closely connected and systematically cross-referenced, each part can be used independently of the others. The New Oxford Shakespeare: The Complete Works: Critical Reference Edition collects the same versions of the same works found in the Modern Critical Edition, keyed to the same line-numbering. But the Critical Reference Edition emphasizes book history and the documentary origins of each text. It preserves the spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, typographical contrasts, ambiguities, and inconsistencies of the early documents. Introductions focus on early modern manuscript and print culture, setting each text within the material circumstances of its production, transmission, and early reception. The works are arranged in the chronological order of the surviving texts: the first volume covers documents manufactured in Shakespeare's lifetime, and the second covers documents made between 1622 and 1728. The illustrated general introduction presents an overview of the texts available to editors and describes how they define Shakespeare. An essay on error surveys kinds of error characteristic of these early text technologies. It is followed by a general introduction to the music of Shakespeare's plays. Introductions to individual works and an extensive foot-of-the-page textual apparatus record and discuss editorial corrections of scribal and printing errors in the early documents; marginal notes record press variants and key variants in different documents. Original music notation is provided for the songs (where available). Because the plays were written and copied within the framework of theatrical requirements, casting charts identify the length and type of each role, discuss potential doubling possibilities, and note essential props. The New Oxford Shakespeare consists of four interconnected publications: the Modern Critical Edition (with modern spelling), the Critical Reference Edition (with original spelling), a companion volume on Authorship, and an online version integrating all of this material on OUP's high-powered scholarly editions platform. Together, they provide the perfect resource for the future of Shakespeare studies.

From political scandals to hauntings at Amityville, local tragedies, triumphs and absurdities find their place alongside accounts of crime and redemption, war and celebrity on a national scale, all told with Scott’s signature passion and candor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hail Regina (A Satire of Political & Religious Romp) SEASON ONE –EPISODES 1-8 This is the first of five novellas in this series. Hail Regina is a classic, theatrical-styled satire, created in a dystopian setting. It is serialized and set in the near future (2025-30). It is family-friendly with mature themes. The novella opens in 2027. There has been a great economic crash that has devastated citizen’s lives throughout the Congregation of States. In the wake of recovery, the Secular Party has devised an inspiration for the citizens. It will reclaim the dilapidated docklands, spread along the waterfront of the Capital. Whilst the atomic test program is on track, the State-leader, Royston Bustwick and his Secular Party, will bring hope to the citizens, as they are called upon to make their state—great again. Atop of Constitution Hill, the statue of the Holy Mother Regina—presides within the sacred waters of the rooftop fountain of the Vivatrium. Angelic beings are sighted gravitating around Her, whilst inexplicable horn-like sounds are heard—up in the skies, beyond the Mt. Liberty Control-Tower and out to the atomic wastelands. Stylistic influences include, 'The Iron Heel' by Jack London (1907), 'We' by Yevgeny Zamyatin (1920), ‘Brave New World’ (1932), ‘Fahrenheit 451’ (1953), Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut (1952) and 'The Children of Men' by P.D. James (1992). This irreverent work has a more light-hearted flavour than the former works mentioned. Its theatrical flamboyance makes this a different offering to the traditional novels in the genre. Hail Regina is written to entertain above all else.

He was only twenty-eight when he died in a plane crash with two of his small children, but singer/songwriter Keith Green had already created a legacy of music and inspiration that would outlive him. A spiritual revolutionary, he found freedom through Jesus, not religion, and spent his last years convincing others to refuse to accept the status quo and instead to bring compassion and honesty back to the church. He touched people through vibrant lyrics in songs like "Your Love Broke Through," "You Put This Love In My Heart," and "Asleep In The Light." Last Days Ministries, which he and his wife Melody founded, went on to challenge thousands of people to take to the mission fields of the world. Now, on the 25th anniversary of his death, Melody has updated her husband's biography with new photos, essays from current musicians who were influenced by Keith, selections from Keith's private journal, and stories about what it was like raising their two remaining children on her own.
