Book excerpt: In an autumnal love story of erotic obsession, possessiveness, remembrance, oblivion, and time, an elderly woman dwells upon a failed love affair of some time past, when she was no longer young but not yet old. The narrator relives meeting her lover, Franz, at the natural history museum, when, for the first time in her life, she experiences all-consuming love and absolute happiness. Ultimately the affair founders because of her inability to believe that Franz will actually leave his wife. After he disappears from her life, she withdraws from the world, waiting for his return and revisiting their time together over and over in a never-ending cycle of obsession. Her love for Franz becomes a compulsive suffering from which she can neither free herself nor withhold anything.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, author David Del Principe asks whether unspeakable truths in their works kept an entire generation of nineteenth-century Italian writers known as the "scapigliati" at the margins of Italian literary life and sparked critics to deride the movement known as Scapigliatura. It is coincidental that issues and themes submerged in their graveyard poetics - physical and psychic transference, sexual identity, vampirism, the supernatural, androgyny, and decadence - have become controversial at the turn of another century while literary and cultural interest in Scapigliatura has reemerged? Scapigliatura, the term that Cletto Arrighi chose to characterize the literary movement led by Ugo Tarchetti, Carlo Dossi, Emilio Praga, Camillo and Arrigo Boito, Giovanni Faldella, Giovanni Camerana, and others, took place in Milan and Turin in the 1860s and 1870s. As social and political visionaries, the "scapigliati" acquired reputations as consummate anticonformists, lacing their works with protests against capitalism, Catholicism, and militarism, and living in perpetual conflict with a prospering bourgeoisie. A desperate resolve to flee from cultural, sociopolitical, and literary strangulation instilled an apocalyptic vision and an affinity for self-destruction in the scapigliati. In fact, several of them lived relatively short lives, and Tarchetti's own tormented life has come to exemplify the anguish of the era of Scapigliatura. Although these artists are loosely grouped as a literary movement, the influence of Scapigliatura has been rightfully confirmed in Decadent fin de siecle literature and, arguably, in the twentieth-century historical avant-garde.

Book excerpt: Those who see the dead soon join them. From the author of the critically-acclaimed Blackwing trilogy comes Ed McDonald's Daughter of Redwinter, the first of a brilliant fantasy series about how one choice can change a universe. Raine can see—and speak—to the dead, a gift that comes with a death sentence. All her life she has hidden, lied, and run to save her skin, and she’s made some spectacularly bad choices along the way. But it is a rare act of kindness—rescuing an injured woman in the snow—that becomes the most dangerous decision Raine has ever made. Because the woman is fleeing from Redwinter, the fortress-monastery of the Draoihn, warrior magicians who answer to no king, and who will stop at nothing to reclaim what she’s stolen. A battle, a betrayal, and a horrific revelation force Raine to enter the citadel and live among the Draoihn. She soon finds that her secret ability could be the key to saving an entire nation. Though she might have to die to make it happen . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a girl from the provinces, meant to do nothing more than run the family store, become a bold and daring poet whose life and work helped change the idea of love in modern Japan? Embracing the Firebird is the first book-length study in English of the early life and work of Yosano Akiko (1879-1942), the most famous post-classical woman poet of Japan. It follows Akiko, who was born into a merchant family in the port city of Sakai near Osaka, from earliest childhood to her twenties, charting the slow process of development before the seemingly sudden metamorphosis. Akiko's later poetry has now begun to win long-overdue recognition, but in terms of literary history the impact of Midaregami (Tangled Hair, 1901), her first book, still overshadows everything else she wrote, for it brought individualism to traditional tanka poetry with a tempestuous force and passion found in no other work of the period. Embracing the Firebird traces Akiko's emotional and artistic development up to the publication of this seminal work, which became a classic of modern Japanese poetry and marked the starting point of Akiko's forty-year-long career as a writer. It then examines Tangled Hair itself, the characteristics that make it a unified work of art, and its originality. The study throughout includes Janine Beichman's elegant translations of poems by Yosano Akiko (both those included in Tangled Hair and those not), as well as poems by contemporaries such as Yosano Tekkan, Yamakawa Tomiko, and others.
