Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standardization is a classic form of rulemaking. Nonetheless, it is notoriously diffuse and gives rise to questions and debate; in particular over the standards' normativity, legitimacy and nature - whether public or private, national or international. Moritz J. K. Blenk applies a policy-orientated approach to international law to comparatively analyze the role of private rulemaking within the context of international economic integration in the World Trade Organization and the European Union. He thereby aims to elucidate the opaque phenomenon of private standardization from a legal perspective and, more profoundly, shed new light on economic integration.

Book excerpt: The book discusses sustainability and law in a multifaceted way. Together, sustainability and law are an emerging challenge for research and science. This volume contributes through an interdisciplinary concept to its further exploration. The contributions explore this exciting domain with innovative ideas and replicable approaches. It combines a variety of authors, from both the public and the private sectors, and thereby guarantees a broad view that enshrines the more theoretical arguments from the academic side as well as stronger practical applicable perspectives. The book provides space for thoughtful expansions of established theories as well as the hopeful emergence of innovative ideas. Moreover, the combination of three to five contributions into the eleven parts respectively aims toward a compression of like minded thoughts. This should lead to an intensification of exchange of viewpoints from different angles on a similar theme. Readers therefore also have the opportunity to concentrate on single chapters, but receive comprised knowledge and a variety of thoughts for new ideas on a particular theme.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of seals and sealing practices have traditionally investigated aspects of social, political, economic, and ideological systems in ancient societies throughout the Old World. Previously, scholarship has focused on description and documentation, chronology and dynastic histories, administrative function, iconography, and style. More recent studies have emphasized context, production and use, and increasingly, identity, gender, and the social lives of seals, their users, and the artisans who produced them. Using several methodological and theoretical perspectives, this volume presents up-to-date research on seals that is comparative in scope and focus. The cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach advances our understanding of the significance of an important class of material culture of the ancient world. The volume will serve as an essential resource for scholars, students, and others interested in glyptic studies, seal production and use, and sealing practices in the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Ancient South Asia and the Aegean during the 4th-2nd Millennia BCE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The packaging closure is the primary interface between the product and the customer. Closures have undergone much evolution and development in recent years. The basic function of a closure is to allow easy access to a packaged product and to reclose the package, when the contents are not used fully in a single serve. However, closures are now expected to deliver a wide variety of additional functions, such as ensuring that the package has not been opened prior to the first opening by the consumer, facilitating the dispensing of the product (especially for food and pharmaceuticals) and supporting the brand equity value of the product. This volume considers the technologies relevant to packaging closures and sealing systems, structured by types of pack. It is directed at packaging technologists, those involved in the design and development of packaging and those who specify or purchase packaging.

Book excerpt: With this 13th in the series of International Conferences on Fluid Sealing these meetings move into their third decade. To be precise it is now thirty-one years since BHRA, as it then was, convened, with no little trepidation, the first of these Conferences in Ashford, England. The massive set of proceedings now occupies a considerable length of shelf in my bookcase and represents a tremendous technological resource - over 400 separate papers. It is interesting that I seem to refer most often to the earlier volumes, probably most of all to the very first. Perhaps this is because this volume marks the beginning of "historic times", AD 0, for fluid sealing technology. There were of course important publications in this field even before 1961. A notable example is the seminal work of my predecessor at BHRA, Dr D. F. Denny, whose researches on reciprocating fluid power seals, "The sealing mechanism of flexible packings", was published in 1947 by a long since defunct government department, the Ministry of Supply. Another notable source is the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' 1957 Conference on Lubrication and Wear. However, there is more to fluid st". aling technology than just tribology, as we must now call lubrication and wear, interest in static seals has really come to the fore in recent years - witness the large batch of papers dealing with this subject in the present Conference.
