Book excerpt: For many Americans the mention of Africa immediately conjures up images of safaris, ferocious animals, strangely dressed "tribesmen," and impenetrable jungles. Although the occasional newspaper headline mentions authoritarian rule, corruption, genocide, devastating illnesses, or civil war in Africa, the collective American consciousness still carries strong mental images of Africa that are reflected in advertising, movies, amusement parks, cartoons, and many other corners of society. Few think to question these perceptions or how they came to be so deeply lodged in American minds. Mistaking Africa looks at the historical evolution of this mind-set and examines the role that popular media plays in its creation. The authors address the most prevalent myths and preconceptions and demonstrate how these prevent a true understanding of the enormously diverse peoples and cultures of Africa. Updated throughout, the fourth edition covers the entire continent (North and sub-Saharan Africa) and provides new analysis of topics such as social media and the Internet, the Ebola crisis, celebrity aid, and the Arab Spring. Mistaking Africa is an important book for African studies courses and for anyone interested in unraveling American misperceptions about the continent.

Book excerpt: When we were children, Rachel and I traveled in dreams to worlds we'd seen only in words. We lived the passions of our printed heroes, especially those whose hearts were summoned and spent in Africa. With those true tales, God seeded a vision, planting us in vastly different fields where only He could be glorified for the harvest. This is His story and hers, told with the same compelling power that first stirred us. Honest about her humanity and earnest about the redeeming power of Jesus Christ, she compels you to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel what the summons of God means. Refreshing in her candor and humor, Rachel relates their family's journey from the couch to the culture of Zambia. She will engage you in experiences from the very funny "Tea Party with Aliens" to the agonizing funerals of pandemic death. Crack this book and it will draw you into the realities of another world and God's ability to effect change at home and abroad. I know. I've already been reading the book of Rachel's life for over fifty years, and I'm moved beyond words. Loving sister, Linda Mohler

Book excerpt: 'To Baghdad and Beyond' is the story of a young evangelical couple who followed the conviction of their faith into a war zone and discovered an alternative to the violence of empires and the complicity of quietism in the "third way" of Jesus's beloved community. Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove writes of his journey from a rural Southern Baptist church to Iraq in a time of war to a Christian community of hospitality in an urban neighborhood. Excited by ways that Christian hope is taking concrete form, Wilson-Hartgrove describes a new monastic movement that is witnessing to a world at war that another way is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing when God is speaking to you is sometimes easier said than done. Indeed, many people question how God speaks to believers today or, in some cases, if he does at all. Yet, for the believer, hearing God's voice is vital for direction in one's life and for spiritual development. In this book, Peterson offers a practical guide for hearing God's voice by presenting numerous anecdotal accounts demonstrating how this has played out in his own life. At the same time, Peterson's instruction is securely anchored in the precedent of Scripture.

Book excerpt: Pastor David Kwang-shin Kim has shown us that a single man bound by his faith can be mightier and more influential than a million individuals whose interests are only their own. The Holy Spirit led Missionary Kim Tae-won to receive the offering. Missionary Kim followed, “If you came to give an offering, then give it.” Then, the young couple gave him an envelope with a check for 80 million won ($100,000). If the People’s Security came to detain Lee while he was leading worship and holding rallies, the two drivers from the intelligence agency always vouched for him.

Book excerpt: When 19-year-old Darby left college and headed to Africa many lives were changed. Hers, the people she came in contact with and those she left at home. Take 5 minutes out of your day and let her challenges build your faith and draw you closer to God. When each of our children were born my husband and I dedicated them to God. We symbolically handed our infants to our pastor as a sign they belonged to God. He then handed them back symbolizing God entrusting them to us to raise and care for. When our second daughter, Darby turned 19 we again handed her over to God as we watched her board a plane for Africa. Letting go took on a whole new meaning.

Book excerpt: “[A]nother hilarious essay collection from Phoebe Robinson.” —The New York Times Book Review “Strikes the perfect balance of brutally honest and laugh out loud funny. I didn’t want it to end.” —Mindy Kaling, New York Times bestselling author of Why Not Me? With sharp, timely insight, pitch-perfect pop culture references, and her always unforgettable voice, New York Times bestselling author, comedian, actress, and producer Phoebe Robinson is back with her most must-read book yet. In her brand-new collection, Phoebe shares stories that will make you laugh, but also plenty that will hit you in the heart, inspire a little bit of rage, and maybe a lot of action. That means sharing her perspective on performative allyship, white guilt, and what happens when white people take up space in cultural movements; exploring what it’s like to be a woman who doesn’t want kids living in a society where motherhood is the crowning achievement of a straight, cis woman’s life; and how the dire state of mental health in America means that taking care of one’s mental health—aka “self-care”—usually requires disposable money. She also shares stories about her mom slow-poking before a visit with Mrs. Obama, the stupidly fake reassurances of zip-line attendants, her favorite things about dating a white person from the UK, and how the lack of Black women in leadership positions fueled her to become the Black lady boss of her dreams. By turns perceptive, laugh-out-loud funny, and heartfelt, Please Don’t Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes is not only a brilliant look at our current cultural moment, it's also a collection that will stay with readers for years to come.

Book excerpt: This book and its author grew up together. The 1960s in America transformed everyone who lived through this amazing time in our nation's history. Civil rights laws were fought for and passed; women began to find a voice and break down barriers. Immigrant workers and Native Americans raised their voices. We became a smarter, more aware nation for a while. The Vietnam War became a symbol of those times. The music helped define us, and the illegal use of banned substances gave some of us the temporary courage to face the insanity head-on. The ranch is a mostly accurate first-person account of one young man's strange journey from gung ho high school student to landing himself in the middle of the " world's most dangerous navy." Our hero slowly evolves into a war resister who gets into the exact amount of trouble to get assigned to a horse ranch in the U.S. Navy. There are a few rants that I included for mostly therapeutic reasons and several well-chosen fits of profanity that help to paint the military experience as it was and, I believe, still is to this day. I consider this book funny and thoughtful, but then I'm severely prejudiced. I wrote this back cover account myself because George Carlin and Joseph Heller had busy schedules in the afterlife, and I don't know Sara Silverman yet. The Ranch is my first attempt at being considered a writer. I have plans to write a second book, which will document my experience as a telephone man in Northeast New Jersey. There will be plenty of danger, sex, drugs, and rock and roll with a hint of The Sopranos, so don't spoil my enthusiasm and buy this book. Thanks, America.

Book excerpt: There has recently been a global resurgence of demands for the acknowledgement of historical and contemporary wrongs, as well as for apologies and reparation for harms suffered. Drawing on the histories of injustice, dispossession and violence in South Africa, this book examines the cultural, political and legal role, and value of, an apology. It explores the multiple ways in which ‘sorry’ is instituted, articulated and performed, and critically analyses its various forms and functions in both historical and contemporary moments. Bringing together an interdisciplinary team of contributors, the book’s analysis offers insights that will be invaluable to global debates on the struggle for justice.
