Book excerpt: Fertility & Beyond was written to open the door to conversations about infertility. The author shares her personal experience with infertility and the journey she and her husband took to have their two beautiful daughters. Throughout this experience, she met many extraordinary people and decided this book would be helpful for others who are struggling to start a family, looking to support a loved one, or simply want to understand the condition that affects 1 in 8 couples. Heather sat down with experts on many aspects of fertility and engaged in a candid conversation. This book is not full of medical jargon or complicated terminology. It was written with the idea that we could start the conversation about infertility to help educate, spread awareness and provide comfort. In this book, Heather takes the reader through her own personal story and then on a journey to meet 7 "professionals" infertility patients may come in contact with. With 1 in 8 couples facing infertility and the cause of infertility equally divided between male and female causes, she opens the door to a conversation about the topic. Chances are you know someone who has been touched by infertility. The author starts the conversation with Tara Joyner, a licensed professional counselor, who talks to Heather about the emotional side of infertility and how to move through the various stages of the process, how to process grief, and how to keep your relationship strong throughout the process. Next, she talks with Melanie Collins, an Ob/Gyn who helps women understand their fertility, their cycle, and basic tests and treatment options that may be available through your regular gynecologist. Dr. Sandeep Mistry, a urologist, joins the conversation next by talking about the causes of male factor infertility, factors that impact male fertility and treatment options available to men. He makes this often uncomfortable topic a little easier to talk about and helps men overcome some of the embarassment they may experience surrounding male factor infertility. Once Heather has discussed the 'basics', so to speak, she connects with Dr. Natalie Burger, a licensed and board certified reproductive endocrinologist. Dr. Burger covers various testing and types of treatment available. The two have a candid conversation about success rates, finding the right doctor, and an overall balanced approach to treatment. Dr. Burger is patient-centered and works hard to help the reader navigate through the various treatment options. With a percentage of all infertility patients seeking IVF (in vitro fertilization), we were able to speak with Tom Turner, an embryologist and pioneer in the field. He shares the history of IVF and how much has changed in just 40 years. You'll get a unique perspective of what happens behind the scenes during an IVF cycle and what goes on in the lab throughout. Heather then talks with Amanda Jester of Waller Law about how to advocate for yourself and your own fertility. Amanda suffers from an autoimmune disease which commonly impacts fertility. She talks about how to have those tough conversations with your providers and to protect your fertility when at all possible through options such as freezing your eggs.
