Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring Douglas J. Soccio's lucid and conversational prose and a well-chosen, reader-friendly array of succinct excerpts from canonical primary sources, ARCHETYPES OF WISDOM brings philosophy to life for its readers through the examination of many paradigmatic philosophies and philosophers. Very much a student-focused book that speaks out of Soccio's non-condescending desire to speak to students where they are and not where they should be, ARCHETYPES OF WISDOM includes numerous pedagogical illustrations and features (Philosophical Queries, a Marginal Glossary, Chapter Summaries, End-of-Chapter Questions for Reflection, to name a few) to make this often-times daunting subject the approachable and engaging subject it ought to be. The Sixth Edition represents a careful revision, with all changes made by Soccio to enhance and refresh the book's reader-praised search-for-wisdom motif. In particular, this edition features new coverage of Lao-Tzu; expanded, chapter-length treatment of Kierkegaard; and an engaging introduction to the complex landscape of philosophy in the twentieth century focusing on the two archetypal thinkers of this time period: Wittgenstein and Heidegger. Soccio's lauded prose is also enhanced in this Sixth Edition by the text's new full-color design. The text is supported by an unmatched array of teaching and learning resources that include CengageNOW-a powerful online tutorial and course management system, and dynamic easy-to-use lecture and class preparation tools exclusive to Wadsworth, a part of Cengage Learning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why we Christians do what we do for church every Sunday morning? Why do we “dress up” for church? Why does the pastor preach a sermon each week? Why do we have pews, steeples, and choirs? This ground-breaking book, now in affordable softcover, makes an unsettling proposal: most of what Christians do in present-day churches is rooted, not in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles. Coauthors Frank Viola and George Barna support their thesis with compelling historical evidence and extensive footnotes that document the origins of modern Christian church practices. In the process, the authors uncover the problems that emerge when the church functions more like a business organization than the living organism it was created to be. As you reconsider Christ's revolutionary plan for his church—to be the head of a fully functioning body in which all believers play an active role—you'll be challenged to decide whether you can ever do church the same way again.

Book excerpt: Is God temporal, 'in time', or atemporal, 'outside of time'? Garrett DeWeese begins with contemporary metaphysics and physics, developing a causal account of dynamic time. Drawing on biblical material as well as discussions of divine temporality in medieval and contemporary philosophical theology, DeWeese concludes that God is temporal but not in physical time as we measure it. Interacting with issues in the history of philosophy, contemporary philosophy of science, and philosophy of religion, this book offers students a thorough introduction to the key issues and key figures in historical and contemporary work on the philosophy of time and time in theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short book deals with the debate among Christians about the timing of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. There are several viewpoints on this topic, each with its defenders. Is Christ coming again in the future, and in what sequence of events will that happen? Or did the Second Coming of Christ happen in the past as some scripture seem to say when it describes the time as quickly? The Creeds have not really dealt with this issue in any definitive statement other than to say he is coming again. All Christians believe that there will be a final coming in judgment to sum up human history. The authority for Christians on this issue is the Bible, the Word of God. The two viewpoints dealt with in this book are Preterist (in the past) and Futurist (in the future). While not an extended support of either position, although the author is a preterist by conviction, this book speaks out against the futurist writers identifying a preterist as a heretic. Often relying on the Creeds, there is a lack of historical scholarship on just how the Creeds were constructed. In the view of the author, a preterist, even if mistaken, does not hold to a belief or reading of the scripture that rises to the level of heresy. The attacks against preterists are unwarranted, unkind, and unworthy of Christian scholarship.
